Tongue-tie

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a congenital condition that restrict’s the tongue’s movement. It is a band of tissue that attaches the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Children that have a tongue-tie often have difficulty with sticking their tongue out or keeping their tongue to the roof of the mouth. This can impact their speech development, interfere with breastfeeding, affect their swallowing, and affect the development of the palate and formation of the jaw.

Parents will commonly notice the following during early childhood: trouble latching or other nursing issues, difficulty swallowing, issues like colic (because baby is sucking in air while nursing when unable to fully latch), constant drooling, and can’t stick out their tongue past the front teeth. As the child grows older, they commonly have speech issues (pronouncing certain types of words), gaps/spaces between their lower and upper front teeth, inability for their tongue to reach the roof of the mouth.

Chiropractic cranial work is a conservative and effective way to help majority of tongue-tie cases. A comprehensive evaluation of the tongue, palate, jaw function and cranium by an experienced chiropractor will give the parent and child the best outcome and the care needed to resolve this condition. This is will also assess whether more invasive care is necessary for the condition, i.e. surgical intervention.
